Enjoying a vehicle which prioritises both performance and the health of the planet; it’s no longer a catch-22. With the T-Charge about to come into full swing, have you considered all of your options?
With many older vehicles struggling to offer the best of both worlds, it’s in the interests of many to consider an upgrade. However, you might be surprised to hear that it won’t necessarily cost the earth, and there’s plenty of perks to trying something new.
With sights set on a cleaner Capital, a levy known as the ‘T-Charge’ will come into play on the 23rd of October 2017; the Toxicity Charge applies to any vehicle driving through the centre of London which fails to meet Euro 4 emissions standards, and sets drivers back a hefty £10 a day.
Vehicles which don’t meet the Euro 4 standards are typically over 10 years old, and the driving zones in question are also covered by the London Congestion Charge. So, an inefficient vehicle driving through central London between 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, will need to cough up a daily fee of £21.50, both charges considered. Not sure if you’ll be hit? Transport for London (TfL) has provided a handy vehicle checker, so you can be sure of whether your car meets the Euro 4 standard, before you travel: http://bit.ly/2rUClYH.
If you don’t own a vehicle which meets the Euro 4 standard and you also happen to drive through London on the regular, it soon stops making financial sense to use your existing car. But when it comes to purchasing an upgrade, the benefits don’t stop when you avoid the T-Charge. Not only will you contribute to a cleaner, healthier place to live, but you’ll also benefit from its efficiency wherever you may roam. Electric and hybrid vehicles, for example, can be as cheap as 2p per mile to drive, with their practicality also increasing rapidly; a range of 100 miles per charge is a fairly standard baseline, with capability increasing to 700 miles for range extended models. Given that technology is developing so quickly, it’s no surprise that both the UK Government and automotive industry believe that by 2040, almost none of Europe’s new cars will be powered by a traditional petrol or diesel engine.
Audi remains a strong investor in the research and development of increasingly efficient vehicles; the most notable result of this commitment is the Audi e-tron range, which currently consists of the A3 Sportback e-tron and Q7 e-tron, both of which benefit from an electric motor alongside a conventional combustion engine.
The Q7 e-tron is the world’s first plug-in hybrid with an integrated heat pump, allowing the intelligent SUV to re-use waste heat for climate control; all power has a purpose. The A3 Sportback e-tron continues to be eco-exceptional, with a 2016 re-design allowing for a strong 75 kW electric motor and a 1.4 TFSI petrol engine, with all the benefits of compact car. Green with guts, the e-tron range brings efficiency directly into the luxury market.
Electric hybrids aside, Audi continue to make every vehicle which rolls off the production line an example of intelligent efficiency. Sailing past the Euro 4 emissions standard and looking solidly at Euro 6, you can be sure that purchasing a new Audi is not only an investment into the air we breathe, but a more economical way to enjoy power, performance and pleasure behind the wheel.
