The Peugeot 208 is a smart-looking and well-equipped supermini that is affordable to run and comes in an array of trim levels.
The 208 is available in Access, Active, Allure and GT Line grades, as well as a range of three-door-only trims. This arresting hatchback boasts a number of colour-keyed fixtures, including door handles and (electrically operated and heated) door mirrors. These are complemented by a Hurricane Grey solid paint finish, which is standard with most grades, while optional liveries such as Bianca White, Nera Black, and Roja Red are also available. Standard lighting includes follow-me-home headlights, daytime running lights, boomerang-style LED tail lights and a rear fog lamp.
Lightweight and stylish alloy wheels are a feature of Active trims and above, as are LED daytime running lights, while cornering-assist fog lights come with Allure grades and upwards.
A five-person cabin provides plenty of space, even for adults in the back row. The driver can quickly get comfortable thanks to a height-adjustable seat and a height-and-reach-adjustable steering wheel (the latter is leather-trimmed with Active grade onwards). A range of standard features include power-assisted steering, cruise control, power-operated front windows (one-touch on the driver’s side) and a 12-volt socket. Air-conditioning is also included, while GT Line trims and upwards bring automatic dual-zone air-conditioning. The 208 possesses a minimum-capacity 208-litre boot, one of the largest in its class.
A 1.2-litre 67bhp petrol engine is available with entry-level Access trims, delivering 60.1mpg and a 108g/km CO2emission figure. Also selectable with Access grades is a 1.6-litre 74bhp diesel unit, which returns as much as 80.7 mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 90g/km. For optimal performance, a 1.6-litre 205bhp petrol engine produces 0-60mph in approximately 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. This is available with three-door GTi models.
Audio entertainment is provided by an AM/FM radio, a CD player and two loudspeakers, and Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity is included as standard too. Active grades and above add DAB radio, two more speakers, steering wheel-mounted controls and a seven-inch multifunction colour touchscreen.
Awarded a five-star rating by Euro NCAP, the 208’s driver aids include an Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Programme, Hill-start Assist, automatic hazard light activation and tyre pressure sensors. Passive safety elements such as child-proof locks, ISOFIX anchor points, seatbelt reminders and multiple airbags are also featured. The vehicle is secured with a Thatcham-approved immobiliser, remote central locking and deadlocks.
