Like the hard-top version, the Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet combines retro style with brilliant performance – and this time you can also motor with the top down.
This convertible represents a modern reinvention of a classic. It combines reliable design and engineering with a distinct sense of fun. Curvy edges and body-coloured bumpers make it instantly recognisable. The range-topping R-Line receives extra-muscular front and rear bumpers to create a sportier profile.
The multi-layered fabric roof takes just 9.5 seconds to raise or lower, and can be activated at speeds of up to 30mph. It also insulates the cabin from engine and road noise. All models can be customised with a host of paint finish options to suit your taste – think Tornado Red, Blue Silk Metallic and Pure White.
For a fun soft-top, the Beetle Cabriolet is surprisingly practical. The convertible features a similar cabin to the hard-top version – expect the top build quality and colourful dash design to give the interior an energetic look and feel.
Bolstered seats provide additional support and comfort, keeping you in place when driving through corners. There’s ample space for front and back passengers too, plus a 225-litre boot – which is particularly generous for a convertible. Thanks to intelligent design, the roof sits on top of the boot when it’s folded down so you don’t lose out on space.
The Beetle Cabriolet shares the same engine range as the hatchback version. And all models come with extra bracing and clever rear suspension to maintain performance whether the top is up or down. Choose between four refined units – there are two petrol and two diesel engines. The turbocharged 104bhp 1.2-litre petrol offers returns of up to 52mpg and hits 60mph in less than 11 seconds. The more powerful 148bhp 1.4-litre version hits the mark in approximately nine seconds. If you want diesel, the 108bhp 2.0-litre unit returns 59mpg and achieves a 0-60mph time of under 11 seconds. The 148bhp version reduces the time to 8.9 seconds.
The Beetle Cabriolet is fitted with six airbags as standard, along with electronic stability control to keep you firmly pinned to the road. What’s more, the optional intelligent hill-holder clutch is designed to stop you rolling backwards on uphill junctions.
Mid-level trims and above feature air conditioning and DAB radio, while the options list includes an intuitive touchscreen satellite navigation system and a top-quality Fender sound system. You can also select automatic headlights and wipers on some trim levels, along with parking sensors and cruise control.
