“The Volvo Concept Coupé is no
futuristic car, it is designed to demonstrate the capability of our new
architecture.” – Volvo Vice President of Design, Thomas Ingenlath.
The streamline two-door Concept Coupé utilises the Swedish marque’s Scalable Product Architecture; its flexibility enabling Volvo’s designers to be more adventurous. A new kind of front fascia has been developed, resulting in a ‘floating’ radiator grille (adorned with the Volvo emblem). Slim T-shaped LED headlights are positioned on either side.
Ingenlath acknowledges that the vehicle has been partly inspired by a Volvo classic, the P1800. In the 1960s, this iconic sports car was immortalised in The Saint, a popular television series that starred Roger Moore.
Despite this nod to the company’s past, Ingenlath asserts that the Concept Coupé is far from being merely retro. He describes the car as possessing a “confident stance” and drew attention to its “proportions and most prominent design signatures.”
The car’s centre console is dominated by a big touchscreen, which provides control over many interior features. Physical buttons are positioned underneath and many controls are steering wheel-mounted. Also included is a head-up display, which, along with the tablet-like touchscreen, is rendered in wood and leather and trimmed with glass. This concept coupé features four seats, each upholstered in tanned leather.
A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is paired with an electric motor and battery pack. The former powers the car’s front wheels, while the latter combination propels the vehicle’s rear wheels. This hybrid system delivers the type of power produced by a V8: approximately 395bhp and 599Nm of torque.
Volvo, of course, has an enviable reputation for its safety technology, which the company is always seeking to evolve. To this end, the Concept Coupé incorporates an autonomous steering system, which is designed to prevent collisions.
The Concept Coupé demonstrates the kind of design and technology innovations that have already begun to inform Volvo’s new generation of vehicles.
