Kia have brought their A-game to the NAIAS car show this week, revealing their first Gran Turismo; the high-spec Stinger.
In a show which is usually ruled by American manufacturers, Kia have turned the tables with the unveiling of their flagship sports saloon. While the brand is generally considered a mass-market, value-orientated outfit, the Stinger is a pleasant surprise to the motor industry at large; the first performance production vehicle which the company has released to date, Kia are thrilled to positively enrich their reputation and blaze a new trail in a fresh segment.
Tipped to be available with numerous engine and drivetrain options, the Kia Stinger will have an athletic road presence, focussing on a sophistication which will not alienate their current customers. The familiar ‘tiger-nose’ grille will be prominently displayed, while vibrant LED headlamps illuminate the front end.
The Stinger’s wheelbase, at 114.4 inches, is impressively long and outstretches many popular vehicles in the segment, including the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz CLS. In combination with being both longer and wider than many of its competitors (190.2 and 73.6 inches), the Stinger provides a spacious environment for passengers; in addition, the chassis is made of 55% advanced high-strength steel, giving the car an extremely rigid body for enviable dynamics.
While the final engine specification is still under development, Kia have released some key details of the power one can expect from their bellwether GT. The standard 2.0-litre turbocharged four-litre Theta II engine will create an estimated 255 hp at 6,200 rpm, while a maximum torque of 260 lb.-ft is available from 1,400 to 4,000 rpm. The optional 3.3-litre twin turbo V6 Lambda II engine is where the Stinger truly breaks the mould, with a predicted 365 hp at 6,000 rpm and the full-force of maximum torque. The Stinger is aiming to reach 5.1 seconds to 62 mph and a goosebump-inducing peak of 167 mph while using the twin turbocharged V6 engine.
