Finally, the announcement that longer lorries up to 18.55m - over two metres above the standard size - will be allowed on Britain’s roads, starting 31/05. This comes after an 11-year trial consisting of almost 3,000 longer semi-trailers and 300 operators.
According to ministers, the lengthier lorries will be able to handle pallets, waste packing, fast-moving consumer items, and retail products.
The 11-year trial has demonstrated that deploying LSTs will result in 8% fewer trips for the same volume of goods. As a result, one standard-size trailer will be taken off the road every 12 journeys.
These trials will boost productivity, cut down on HGV trips by packing the same amount of freight into fewer lorries, and cut down on mileage, traffic, and carbon emissions.
