If your tyres are under-inflated by just 7psi, you are not just risking your safety but you are probably losing about one mile per gallon every time you drive your car as well.
That’s according to tyre manufacturer Michelin, which has just published the results of a national tyre inspection.More than 500 cars in Tesco car parks were inspected, and the results suggest that nearly four out of ten cars might have at least one tyre that is either ‘dangerously’ (between 7psi and 14psi under-inflated) or ‘very dangerously (‘more than 14psi) under-inflated.
Checking tyre pressures regularly “makes sense from a cost and environmental point of view, but more importantly it’s critical for the safety of the vehicle, its passengers, other road users and pedestrians,” said Michelin’s Technical Manager for the UK Jamie McWhir.
TyreSafe, the national tyre safety organisation, points out that tyres can wear out 10% faster if they are 10% under-inflated as well as using more fuel, and that the vehicle becomes harder to control. The distance required to bring the vehicle to a stop can increase substantially – especially when it’s wet.TyreSafe recommends that motorists check their tyres at least once a month and before starting a long journey.
Most vehicles have two recommended pressure settings, depending on whether they are fully loaded or not.If you are unsure about the correct tyre pressures for your car, or how to inflate your tyres safely, pop in to your local Marshall Audi Centre. Our service staff would love to help you!
