The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive may be a compact car, but it still carries all of the design traits that have made Mercedes-Benz such a respected name around the globe. Despite its size, the B-Class Electric Drive contains the same elegant lines as its stablemates, whilst the four-barred grille and badge combination immediately grabs the eye. As this is an electric vehicle there are plentiful electric blue highlights across the bodywork, including the wing mirror cases, on the grille and in the headlights.
Every inch of the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive has been designed to make sure you know you're driving something special and groundbreaking. This is the first wholly electric Mercedes-Benz for mass consumption, and the manufacturer has pulled out all the stops. The seats are upholstered with Artico leather, a man-made leather that guarantees comfort, grip and tactile pleasure, whilst blue stitching appears throughout.
The driver meanwhile is aided by an eight-inch multimedia infotainment screen that displays various information and read-outs in one easy-to-read location.
As a fully electric car, the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive's engine has been designed with economy in mind. To that end, the B-Class Electric Drive comes equipped with a three-mode operation. As well as the car's standard Sport set-up which gives 179bhp, you can choose either to run in Economy or Economy Plus. Economy reduces the horsepower output to 132bhp, whilst the Economy Plus option drops the output even further to just 83bhp whilst reducing the top speed to 68mph.
The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive comes with the usual array of safety features, including a full complement of airbags, but the exceptionally clever Collision Prevent Assist Plus system is one of the most impressive optional extras. Collision Prevent Assist Plus uses information from the car's radar to assess the traffic ahead, allowing the car to use battery-recuperating braking to slow itself, or switch to a 'sailing mode' that doesn't use the battery if the way ahead is clear.
All of this technology and more has helped the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive to receive a five-star crash rating from Euro NCAP
