Mercedes-Benz has released the GLA onto the market – a super-reliable, compact SUV with good economy and plenty of safety features.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLA is unmistakeably a crossover SUV, a relatively new niche that luxury car manufacturers are striving to fill in the best ways possible. The GLA owes a debt to both the traditional four-wheel drive and hatchbacks such as Mercedes-Benz's own A-Class. In fact the majority of its styling options, including the low bodywork, curved profile and sturdy lines give it the comforting appearance of a much smaller family car, whilst the 17-inch alloy wheels and sharp cut lines show that this is still a car designed to be striking.
Whichever trim option you choose, you can be sure that the new Mercedes-Benz GLA is a comfortable and versatile place to be. The plastics used are thick and hard-wearing and can be swapped for carbon fibre in places, whilst the seats are upholstered in a high-quality man-made leather. The rotary air vents that have become a trademark of Mercedes-Benz in recent years are also featured. With a range of optional extras and trim-specific equipment however, you can really make the interior of the GLA suit your own tastes exactly. For example, the E trim comes with a 5.8-inch infotainment screen, controlled via a dial, whilst the Sport and AMG lines get an even bigger eight-inch screen. You can also choose to add lumbar support to the seats and DAB digital radio reception as extras.
The choice of engines that comes with the new Mercedes-Benz GLA is perhaps more concise than in other classes, but there is more than enough selection to get the driving experience you want. Each engine on offer has four cylinders, and at the entry-level there's a 1.6-litre turbo charged petrol engine that will give you 154bhp. There's also a 2.1-litre turbo diesel with 134bhp, a 168bhp diesel and a 2.0-litre turbo charged petrol engine. Each comes equipped with Mercedes’ 4Matic system, which utilises a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLA has received a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, thanks to its high quality build and full complement of airbags. It also comes equipped with several hi-tech safety programmes and features as standard, including cruise control with a limiter, lane keeping assist, blind spot assist, parking pilot and active brake assist to keep you, your passengers and other road users safe during every journey.
