Taking the E-Class’ reputation as the ultimate intelligent saloon to the next level, Mercedes-AMG are proud to introduce the E 63 4MATIC+ and E 63 S 4MATIC+; an injection of intense power in an already illustrious package.
The new exterior design has given the E-Class’ striking executive aesthetic a flex of underlying muscle, with an extra 17 millimetres in width and larger wheels on the front axle. Prioritising the reduction of drag for low fuel consumption, the aerodynamic design of the E 63 also allows for agile handling on country roads, as well as stability at high speeds on the motorway – the perfect blend of dynamics and counterweight.
Boasting a performance output of 450 Kw (612 hp), the E 63 S 4MATIC+ makes excellent use if its AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, racing from 0-62mph in a blistering 3.4 seconds, with a capped top speed of 155 mph (this can be increased to a spine-tingling 186 mph with the AMG Driver’s package). This innovative V8 biturbo powerhouse is ignited via a twin turbocharging unit, placed in-between the V of the cylinders; this ‘hot inner V’ technology allows for a compact design, rapid response and low emissions, with optimum air flow to the catalytic converters. The power output is, therefore, a new breed of increased torque at a low rev count, with instant response payoff.
As previously seen in the SLK 55, the E 63 keeps emissions low via the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system, with the technology making its debut in a Mercedes-AMG turbocharged engine. In a partial-load range, cylinders two, three, five, and eight are automatically deactivated, allowing for a significant reduction in consumption and enviable efficiency. A 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system also keeps the E 63 flexible, with torque distribution between the front and rear axles made fully variable for the first time. Gear shifts are also seamlessly efficient, with a special software to ensure short shift times, fast multiple downshifts and a double-clutching function.
Keeping the road handling both exhilaratingly agile and secure, the AMG Sports Suspension on the E 63 is modelled on AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension, offering high camber stability and blissfully comfortable steering precision. A mechanical rear differential lock on the E 63 4MATIC+, and an electronically controlled rear differential lock on the E 63 S 4MATIC+ also reduce slip on the inside wheel while cornering, with improved traction for earlier acceleration out of the turn. Electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering also features a variable rack-and-pin ratio, offering authentic feedback in three modes; Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.
Intelligent Drive functions and options also continue to ensure that the E-Class remains unchallenged with regard to advanced vehicle astuteness. One such stand-out feature is the semi-automated driving experience of DRIVE PILOT, which allows for relief in tedious driving conditions, such as slow-moving traffic congestion.
