Ford has joined forces with transportation marketing company Lyft, with the intention of bringing self-driving cars directly to your driveway.
In the hope of making autonomous vehicles as commonplace as a train or taxi, the partnership between Ford and Lyft will research solutions to make self-driven transport a readily-available, as well as competitive, mode of travel. To do this, both companies will utilize their own particular expertise; for Lyft, a strong client base and knowledge of city traffic mapping will work to the pair's advantage. For Ford, years of experience in autonomous technology development, as well as large-scale manufacturing, will showcase their skills in the project. In addition, both companies have access to a wealth of data, as well as an in-depth understanding of fleet management.
Moulding their knowledge around what customers crave in a self-driving transport market, Ford will conduct research by allowing Lyft’s network to use their human-driven vehicles, testing interfaces and compatibility with Lyft’s app. In addition, Ford will also introduce self-driving trial vehicles to Lyft’s circulation, hoping to pull the strings on a successful autonomous vehicle business model.
