Is this the end for smart motorways in the UK?

New smart motorways removed from government road-building plans in recognition of lack of public confidence and cost pressures.

The announcement from the government earlier today said 11 smart motorways scheduled for construction between 2020 and 2025 that were previously paused won't be built, and an additional three included in future plans have all been removed from the government's road construction plans through 2030.

A form of highway known as "smart motorways" uses technology to enhance traffic flow and ease congestion.

Smart motorways, which were introduced in 2006, feature variable speed limits, lane-control systems, and other modern technology to keep traffic moving safely and effectively. In lots of cases, they have removed the hard shoulder, which has been highlighted as a potential safety hazard.

To control vehicle speed and lower the chance of collisions, smart motorways use variable speed limits that are constantly monitored and changed. When traffic is heavy, the lane-control system enables the closure of some lanes to help relieve congestion.

The Government froze further development in January 2022 while it conducted an assessment into the cost and safety of the smart motorways. New smart motorways were therefore delayed from opening across the UK. Following the new statement, they have now been cancelled.
