The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has its foot firmly on the accelerator when it comes to autonomous driving. Offering a full suite of up-to-the-minute autonomous technology from the brand’s Stuttgart hub, the new S-Class brings a new benchmark to expected levels of safety, comfort and convenience.
Introducing superbly refined camera and radar systems, the new S-Class can read the road like a sixth sense, using map and navigation data to pre-empt a host of human scenarios.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC uses planned routes to reduce speed ahead of bends, junctions, roundabouts and toll booths, before increasing where required. Active Lane Change Assist uses sensors and driver input to detect if the road ahead is clear, as well as the surrounding area, ensuring safe movement between lanes. Active Speed Limit Assist also recognises road signs and adapts speed accordingly, with vehicle tailbacks made less of a chore with automated stops and starts, following the traffic ahead.
Keeping safety firmly at the fore, Active Emergency Stop Assist brings the vehicle to a halt if it detects the driver is no longer actively controlling the car while Active Steering Assist is used. The vehicle will give a visual and audible prompt in an attempt to rouse the driver if no movement is detected in a defined time; if the driver still doesn’t react, the car is brought to a safe stop. In addition, Active Brake Assist will use a cross-traffic feature to help the driver avoid crashes with vehicles ahead, stationary or crossing one’s path, if the driver fails to take notice. In addition, Evasive Steering Assist will use extra steering torque is the driver is using an evasive manoeuvre to avoid a collision, while Active Lane Keeping Assist will apply brakes on one side and pull the car back into its lane, should a continuous line be passed. Blind Spot Assist gives a visual and audible alert to warn of potential side collisions, while Car-to-X Communication offers communication regarding on-road hazards to every driver using that particular system.
To make life even easier, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC helps the driver find a suitable parking spot when entering or leaving parallel or end-on parking spaces, while Remote Parking Assist allows the driver to park in a tight space via smartphone – no more squeezing out of the door in a tiny bay!
A Mercedes-Benz by true definition, the new S-Class also boasts a full suite of efficient and energetic engines, which are blazing a trail in their segment. The entry Mercedes-Benz S 5604MATIC features an all-new six-cylinder diesel engine; two output levels with 210 kW (286 hp) and 600 Nm, as well as 250 kW (340 hp) and 700 Nm, make an immensely muscular impression while still using seven percent less fuel. With a new in-line six-cylinder petrol and a plug-in hybrid powertrain yet to come, the S-Class promises to be the game-changer of the year.
