The striking Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 graced the event which ran between the 16th and 21st of August at the Monterey Peninsula, as part of a spectacular show of head-turning classis cars. Juxtaposing the design language of Mercedes past, present and future, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 offers a classic presence with masterstrokes of innovation; traditional wood trims delicately frame the advanced digital control and display interfaces, with an elm floor which echoes nautical themes. Elm is a very deliberate choice; as the palest open-pore wood, Mercedes-Benz are looking to introduce the material to series production. With hints of rose gold and a spacious 360-degree lounge, every journey is tipped with splendour.
The Maybach 6 is far from retrospective, but still uses the DNA of time-honoured Mercedes-Benz vehicles to form its ageless appeal; a car of tomorrow which would still suit the road of today. Prime examples include its rangy bonnet and low roof line; classic aesthetic ideals of bygone coupes, but still complimenting the exaggerated appearance of an ultramodern vehicle, unbridled by the absence of traditional visual hooks such as bulky spoilers. Instead, the carefully projected feature lines on each side of the Maybach 6’s body provide smooth and minimalist aerodynamic properties.
Inspired by the pinstripes of distinguished suits, the radiator grille is fitted with fine, vertical struts, producing a front-end which almost engulfs its surroundings. The extremely shallow split windows and narrow tail lights at the rear help to create the illusion of a vehicle that’s ready to pounce.
A gallant six metres in length, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed as an electric car and has an enviable output of 550 Kw (750 hp); the slender underfloor battery has a usable capacity of 80 kWh, allowing the vehicle to sprint from 0-100 km/h in an electrifying 4 seconds. With just 5 minutes of charge, the Maybach 6 will gain 100 kilometres of range; a convenience enhanced by charging wirelessly via an electromagnetic field. Alongside its power and efficiency, the vehicle offers a spectacular transparent display across the front windscreen, revealing driving-related data and navigation information, controlled by occupants using hand gestures from within the cabin. All in all, the Mercedes-Maybach 6 is truly an experience fit for expectations beyond the norm.
