The RAC have warned drivers to be extra cautious this winter; a 24% upsurge in pothole-related breakdowns were reported between October and December, compared to the same period in 2015.
The most common damage to cars as a result of these unwelcome holes included broken shock absorbers and suspension springs, as well as warped wheels. Unfortunately, the problem isn’t going to get better anytime soon; with the first quarter of 2017 predicted to be both wet and cold, it’s the ideal climate for road surfaces to become even more fissured.
Alongside the increased prevalence of potholes, investment in preventative maintenance is also falling. Lack of funding in local roadworks can mean that repairs take months to materialise, leaving drivers exposed to the hazards for increasing amounts of time.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. SKODA are currently offering a free ‘all around the wheel’ safety check, so you can get an expert opinion over whether your car has been damaged by poor road conditions. Taking no longer than 30 minutes, experienced SKODA technicians can detect small issues before they grow, so your car’s overall health doesn’t need to dip because of pothole impairment.
