Luxury meets efficiency in this new plug-in hybrid version of the Audi A8. This executive saloon, beloved by chauffeurs, packs a punch with an electric motor capable of producing 134bhp, harmoniously combined with a 3.0-litre V6 fuel engine — achieving a total output to 443bhp and 700Nm of torque. The availability of immediate torque from the electric motor makes for effortless overtaking. It’s a refined ride too, with wind and road noise supressed at high speeds, and city driving a pleasure thanks to excellent soundproofing throughout.
The luxury saloon starts in “EV” mode, where it drives on purely electric power. The combustion engine is engaged when the vehicle is accelerated to a speed where petrol becomes a more efficient source of power.
Hybrid mode offers two options: “Auto” and “Hold”. In “Auto”, the predictive operating strategy is activated when the driver starts route guidance. This results in battery charge being spread intelligently and optimally along the route, with electric portions in urban areas, and petrol fuel used for longer or faster stretches. When you need to conserve battery power for urban driving at the end of your journey, simple choose “Hold” mode. This is the essence of Audi hybrids – a quiet, clean drive that cleverly ensures you get to your destination in the most fuel-efficient way.
You’ll enjoy the spacious interior of the A8. Rear passengers can sit back and enjoy a heated footrest with massage function whilst making full use of the wide variety of infotainment options.
The A8 TFSI e can achieve 0-62.1mph in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph. Acceleration in electric only mode is 0-37.3mph in 6.9 seconds.
A 3.0 TFSI turbocharged V6 direct-injection engine with a petrol particulate filter delivers an output of 250 kW (340 PS) and 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) of torque. Features include: an eight-gear Tiptronic transmission, electromechanical progressive steering, plus quattro permanent all-wheel drive.
The Audi A8 L 60 TFSI e quattro is equipped with a synthetic e-sound as standard to alert pedestrians and cyclists in city traffic.
Plug-in hybrids combine a conventional internal combustion engine (IC engine) and an electric motor supplied with energy from a lithium-ion battery located at the rear. Audi’s smart powertrain management system controls the interaction of the electric motor and the IC engine. It decides when the car will operate in fully electric mode, when energy is recuperated, and when to coast or activate the IC.
The battery can be charged at a charging station or power outlet.
Audi offers various solutions for charging at home. The standard mobile charging system can be used with either a 230-volt household outlet or a 400 volt three-phase outlet. The optional “connect” charging system doubles the charging power to as much as 22 kW. Combined with a home energy management system, it offers intelligent functions such as charging when electricity is less expensive or with solar electricity if the home is equipped with a photovoltaic system. You can control all charging processes as well as pre-heating/pre-cooling via your smartphone with the myAudi app.
