Nissan trialling innovative cool paint technology

Press Information | 8 August 2024

Nissan has been experimenting with a groundbreaking automotive paint designed to cool down a vehicle's cabin during the summer, thereby cutting down on air conditioning energy consumption.

In collaboration with Radi-Cool, a leader in radiative cooling technology, Nissan has developed a paint infused with metamaterials—advanced synthetic composites that possess unique properties not typically seen in nature.

This initiative aligns with Nissan’s commitment to pioneering unique innovations that enhance travel experiences while contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

In November 2023, Nissan launched a year-long feasibility trial at Tokyo International Air Terminal at Haneda. Partnering with Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd., Radi-Cool Japan, and All Nippon Airways (ANA) airport services, Nissan applied its innovative cool paint to a Nissan NV100 service vehicle used by ANA's airport operations.

Haneda Airport, with its expansive, open tarmac, offered an ideal setting to assess the paint's effectiveness under real-world high-temperature conditions.

Though still undergoing testing, the results so far have been remarkable. When parked side by side under direct sunlight, a vehicle coated with Nissan's cool paint has demonstrated up to a 12-degree Celsius decrease in exterior surface temperature and an interior that's up to 5 degrees Celsius cooler compared to a vehicle with standard automotive paint.

The paint’s cooling capabilities become especially evident when a vehicle is left under the sun for extended periods. A cooler cabin is not only more comfortable to enter but also demands less time for the air conditioning to reach a pleasant temperature. This reduction in cooling time lessens the strain on the engine or battery, enhancing efficiency in both traditional and electric vehicles while boosting occupant comfort.

Dr. Susumu Miura, Senior Manager and specialist at Nissan’s Advanced Materials and Processing Laboratory, is spearheading the development of this innovative solution. He played a leading role in Nissan’s award-winning noise-reducing acoustic material, and has dedicated much of his career at Nissan to exploring ways to make cars quieter, cooler and more efficient.

“My dream is to create cooler cars without consuming energy,” explained Miura. “This is especially important in the EV era, where the load from running air-conditioning in summer can have a sizable impact on the state of charge.”

As testing and development progress, Miura and his team are hopeful that this innovation will eventually be available for custom orders in various colours. Miura anticipates considerable benefits, especially for light commercial vehicles like vans, trucks, and ambulances, which are on the road for extended periods each day.
