Everyday Innovation: The SKODA Octavia shows off impressive updates to connectivity services and driver assistance systems.
SKODA’s top-selling Octavia is receiving a massive boost in specification, including upgrades to Mobile Services and driver assistance systems.
Online services are to be bolstered by the inclusion of Online Traffic Information, offering real-time updates in regard to traffic flow and providing alternative routes. Fuel prices, parking information, news and weather reports are also available online, with the Columbus system upping the ante with Google Earth, Google Street View and automatic map updates.
Care Connect services will ensure that you’re always in safe hands when you drive an Octavia. Emergency call system ‘eCall’ will automatically contact an emergency contact centre if a restraint system is triggered after an accident, while minor accident and breakdown call services are also available on-board.
Moving from crisis to convenience, the Service Scheduling feature sends accurate vehicle information to your SKODA dealer, allowing them to contact you when a service is due and avoid missing essential maintenance. In addition, the SKODA Connect smartphone app will offer the latest remote services, including the handy Vehicle Status service; the status of your car’s lighting and locks will be only a tap away, while the parking position function will tell you the exact location of your vehicle.
Parked in a busy multi-storey? No problem. The SKODA Octavia’s ‘Honk & Flash’ function will make it easy for you to find your car by sounding the horn and flashing its lights. You’ll also receive the extra reassurance of Area and Speed notifications, which will inform you if the car is moved without permission.
Driver Assistance Systems in the Octavia are also significantly updated, with safety firmly at the fore. Predictive pedestrian protection is tailored for city driving, with emergency brakes able to be triggered when a pedestrian walks out in front of traffic when the car is travelling between 6 and 37 mph. Front Assist also includes a city emergency braking system, while Blind Spot Detect will aid the driver during lane changes and monitor the movement of traffic around the vehicle via two radar sensors. In addition, Rear Traffic Alert assists the driver when manoeuvring in or out of a parking space, detecting oncoming vehicles with precision.
As an optional extra, Trailer Assist can also be added on to your SKODA Octavia package. Using a rotary switch for the exterior mirrors, the driver may dictate the angle where the trailer needs to be reversed; when the driver starts to move the vehicle, the system will suggest where best to steer. If you’re reversing without a trailer, the assistant is still on hand; if an obstacle crosses your path, the brakes will be automatically activated.
