The Volkswagen Golf is often considered the go-to hatchback – after more than 50 years on sale, it’s become a household name across the UK.
With so many VW Golf variants to pick from, sometimes it can get a bit overwhelming to separate out which VW Golf is best.
This guide primarily focuses on VW Golf Mk8 trim levels, including the Golf Mk8.5, which was updated in 2024, but we’ll also give a shoutout to popular Golf Mk7 and Golf Mk7.5 trim options.
Quite simply, trim levels are different versions of the same car, each offering a specific balance of features at different price points.
When you upgrade to a higher trim level, you can expect more equipment and, sometimes, a fancier design.
Here are some of the main VW Golf trim levels that have been available over the past two generations.
Base spec with manual air-con, five-inch radio screen and steel wheels with wheel trims.
This adds alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. You guessed it – SE Nav brings sat-nav to the screen.
Entry-level model with alloys, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, all-round parking sensors and a touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
This adds some extra equipment for not a lot more cash – newer versions get a reversing camera, keyless entry and automatic high beams.
Style-focused upgrade, as the name suggests, with bigger alloys, adaptive LED headlights, heated steering wheel and more colour options for the interior ambient lighting.
This sits just below R-Line, so it gets bigger alloys, sporty suspension and interior ambient lighting.
Sporty styling with more aggressive bumpers and alloys, firmer suspension for sharper handling and sports seats inside.
Besides black mirror caps and sporty styling, this model adds an illuminated badge on the grille and some other styling upgrades.
On the whole, we think affordable VW Golf SE Nav and VW Golf Life models offer strong value for money. As far as an entry into the Golf range goes, they’re perfect.
Golf Match and Golf Style editions offer more equipment for drivers who prefer additional creature comforts, while the R-Line model gives buyers the option to buy something sporty that’s still cheap to run.
We’ve covered all of the best VW Golf models and trims to buy separately.
