Volkswagen is one of the biggest and most successful car manufacturers in the world, but who owns Volkswagen and who does VW own?

Today, the Volkswagen Group is knownfor owning a number of popular brands, and unsurprisingly Volkswagen is in there. Others include Audi, Škoda, SEAT and CUPRA.

Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley make up the VW Group’s luxury and sporty brands, and Ducati represents VW’s bike brand.

Who owns VW?

Volkswagen AG (commonly known as the Volkswagen Group) owns VW and the other mentioned brands.

Although it’s a public company, it’s mostly owned by the Porsche-Piëch family and Germany’s State of Lower Saxony (where VW is headquartered).

Where are VW cars made?

Volkswagen and all related companies have tens of models available across the world, which means the Group needs to operate out of multiple factories.

VW’s main plant is in Wolfsburg, Germany. It’s one of the largest car factories on the planet, at 6.5 million square metres. It employs around 70,000 staff and produced nearly half a million vehicles in 2023 alone.

In Germany, VW also has factories in Brunswick (Braunschweig), Chemnitz, Dresden, Emden, Kassel, Osnabrück, Salzgitter and Zwickau.

Other VW facilities serving European nationsinclude:

  • Palmela, Portugal – 236,100 vehicles in 2024 (including VW T-Roc)
  • Polkowice, Poland – 621,000 diesel engines in 2024 for VW, Škoda, SEAT and Audi
  • Pamplona, Spain – 274,688 vehicles in 2024 (including VW Polo, VW T-Cross and VW Taigo)
  • Bratislava and Martin, Slovakia – 268,685 vehicles in 2022 (including VW Touareg, VW up!, VW e-up!, Audi Q7, Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne and Škoda Karoq)

VW also has factories in India, Mexico, USA, Brazil, Argentia, South Africa and China to serve other nations with models we don’t get here in the UK.
