BMW's electric vehicle (EV) battery technology focuses on delivering powerful acceleration and efficient energy use. Unlike traditional combustion engines, BMW's electric motors provide immediate power to the wheels, resulting in rapid acceleration. Additionally, these vehicles feature regenerative braking systems that recover energy during deceleration, converting it back into battery power to enhance overall efficiency.
These batteries promise increased energy density, faster charging times, and improved recyclability, contributing to a reduced environmental footprint.
You can now reduce your CO2 emissions and noise levels when driving around town, whilst setting an example of environmentally-conscious mobility.
Use your own home charger to charge your electric car conveniently from the comfort of your own home. Charge it overnight to start the day with a charged battery. The benefits of having your own home charger: you save time and your electric car charges reliably at home.
The ongoing costs of an electric car are generally lower compared to a combustion engine car, since they have fewer consumable parts, like spark plugs, oil filters or an exhaust system.
Get to your destination with ease with the impressive range of BMW electric cars. The charge-optimised route planner in the vehicle automatically finds the best and fastest charging options along the route according to your needs. An anticipatory and even driving style further increases the range of your electric car. You can conveniently plan your route in advance from the comfort of your home on the My BMW App.
BMW offers convenient home charging solutions for electric vehicles, emphasizing practicality and efficiency. Their preferred partner, Pod Point, provides the Solo 3 Smart Home Charger, an intelligent system featuring standard installation and Auto Power Balancing technology for 7kW units. This charger allows users to remotely schedule charging sessions and monitor energy usage and costs via a smartphone app. Installation is handled by certified electricians through BMW's network of installation partners.
For flexible charging options, BMW offers the Flexible Charger, a mobile solution compatible with various adapters for different socket types. This charger enables users to charge their vehicles at home or on the go, providing adaptability to various charging scenarios.
Additionally, the My BMW App enhances the charging experience by allowing users to plan charging schedules, locate public charging stations, and monitor the vehicle's charging status in real-time. This integration ensures a seamless and user-friendly approach to managing electric vehicle charging needs.
By offering these comprehensive home charging solutions, BMW aims to make the transition to electric driving as convenient and efficient as possible for their customers.
BMW provides a comprehensive public charging infrastructure to support electric vehicles, ensuring flexibility and convenience for drivers. Upon receiving your BMW electric vehicle, you gain immediate access to BMW Charging, which includes a BMW Charging Card and attractive conditions within the BMW Charging network. Registration is straightforward via the My BMW App, linking your vehicle and activating your charging card. This setup grants access to an extensive public charging network, allowing you to start charging within 24 hours. Billing is managed through BMW Charging, providing a clear overview of all charging sessions and associated costs on a monthly basis.
For enhanced convenience, BMW's Plug & Charge feature streamlines the public charging process by eliminating the need for separate authentication at compatible stations. Once set up, simply connect your vehicle to a Plug & Charge-enabled station, and charging will commence automatically, with billing handled via your BMW Charging account or another linked contract. Additionally, BMW offers access to high-power charging networks, such as IONITY, through the BMW Charging service. New BMW electric vehicle owners benefit from the IONITY Plus package, which includes a one-year exemption from standing charges, enabling cost-effective fast charging across Europe.
By integrating these services, BMW ensures that drivers have seamless and efficient access to public charging solutions, enhancing the overall electric vehicle ownership experience.
BMW has made charging your electric vehicle across the UK more convenient than ever. With an expanding network of charging stations nationwide, finding a spot to recharge while traveling or running errands is hassle-free.
While some public EV charging points are free, many fast and rapid chargers require payment. The MyBMW App simplifies the process by helping you locate nearby charging stations, making trip planning easier.
For even greater convenience, you can install a home charging point if you have off-street parking. Home charging is often the most cost-effective and practical option, with potential government grants available to help cover installation costs. However, public charging stations remain a useful alternative for topping up your battery while on the go.
Charging times for your BMW EV vary based on battery size and the speed of the charging station, with faster chargers significantly reducing wait times.
A BEV (battery electric vehicle) drives exclusively on electricity, driven by an electric motor. It therefore doesn't have a combustion engine to drive the vehicle. The electrical energy is stored in a high-voltage battery. Alongside other factors[1] it is mainly its capacity that determines the range of the electric car, in other words, the distance that it can cover with one battery charge. An electric car is considerably more efficient than vehicles with combustion engines, among other things because the drive motor feeds the brake energy back to the battery, a process called recuperation. In addition, electric cars drive locally emission-free. This is a significant difference from combustion engines.
Fully electric cars are ideal for users who can charge their electric car battery at work or at home. At the same time, the public charging infrastructure is expanding at a rapid pace. New charging stations are therefore appearing all the time in urban areas and along motorways. There are also a number of high-power charging stations for ultra-fast charging on longer journeys, such as the charging stations operated by our partner IONITY in Europe. Long journeys are set to become ever simpler.
[1] Other factors affecting the range include the aerodynamics of the vehicle, the travel speed (e. g. motorway/urban driving), driving style, outside temperature etc.
An electric car provides a completely new and emotional driving experience. You will experience amazing electric dynamics, thanks to maximum torque from a standing start with seamless acceleration. At the same time, the almost silent electric motor delivers a new and relaxed driving experience.
A battery electric vehicle is also locally emission-free. It's also almost silent and therefore does its best to protect our environment.
Further benefits of battery electric vehicles include the highest level of government subsidy and tax concessions.
Temperature is a key external factor that affects a battery's performance and capacity. This is no doubt a factor you may have experienced with your mobile phone: its capacity is also limited at very low temperatures. It's the same with your vehicle. The influence of temperature is minimised by optimised operating strategies, however.
And did you know that the battery capacity also indicates your possible available range? Apart from the temperature, the range is largely affected by your personal driving style, and also by energy consumption factors, such as the air conditioning, trailer load, luggage etc. By far the most important factor in terms of driving style is your chosen motorway speed.
If you need to charge on the go, your fully electric BMW will be preconditioned when you enter a DC charging station as your destination. This means that the high-voltage battery will be adjusted to the optimum operating temperature when you reach your destination, which will increase its charging capability and shorten the charging time.
If you need to park your vehicle for a long time, say when away on holiday, there are different factors than can have a positive effect on the battery: maintain a charge of between 30 and 50% and park your car in a cool place or in the shade in summer, and in a garage in winter. Do not leave your vehicle plugged in to charge for longer stationary periods.
The ideal charge is between 10 and 80%. A lower or higher charge is possible, but a charge range of between 10 and 80% is recommended to optimise the service life of your battery. Simply and conveniently set your charging target to 80% in your vehicle menu, and let your car do the rest.
A charging target of 80% will cover all your everyday trips. And when you really need more range, you can just set a higher charging target.
Electric cars work by receiving energy from the battery, which is converted into power by an electric motor. This power is used to drive the wheels. An electric motor generates more torque, and eliminates the need for a traditional transmission and so the power goes straight to the wheels for instant acceleration.
Electric cars do not have a gearbox or clutch, as they use motors instead of engines.
As electricity is not a fuel it has no scale charge, drivers of 100% electric cars are exempt from fuel benefit tax.
Yes, after three years of owning any new BMW vehicle you should book in for an MOT test. Following that, you will be required to book in an MOT every year moving forwards.
