Announced as a major headline during their press conference at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai have lifted the lid on their innovative new concept car; the automated IONIQ.
Aesthetically, the concept vehicle is very similar to other IONIQ models, but with a critical difference; a hidden LiDAR system, allowing the car to unleash innovative self-driving capabilities. Unlike other automated concept vehicles, the IONIQ prides itself in being extremely discreet, looking much like any other vehicle on the road. Hyundai are determined to keep the concept as simple as possible, while still maximising the IONIQ’s unique potential through an in-house autonomous vehicle operating system; this technology aims to use less computing power and therefore be both affordable and accessible to the average driver.
The Autonomous IONIQ’s LiDAR system allows the car to build a picture of its immediate surroundings, thus detecting other vehicles and objects in the vicinity, as well as their relative speed. The vehicle can then react appropriately to hazards, as well as ‘reading’ road signs. Hyundai MnSoft technology will also produce precise location data, as well as mapping road and lane sizes for accuracy. Using these features, the Autonomous IONIQ aims to provide an attainable solution to complex and hazardous driving scenarios, such as changing lanes, negotiating heavy traffic and remaining acutely aware of pedestrians.
A full preview of the Automated IONIQ range will be revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2017, with Hyundai’s self-driving vehicles being put to the test on Las Vegas’ stunning landscape.
