UK restriction of red diesel from April 2022

Affecting businesses and individuals currently entitled to supply or use rebated gas oil (red diesel).

Red diesel is just ordinary ‘white’ diesel but with dye in it – BUT it is taxed at a much lower rate than white diesel. This rebated red fuel was introduced as a concession for certain industrial users in offhighway applications because fuel duty was mainly intended to be a tax on road vehicles.

From April 1 2022 many who use red diesel to power off-road vehicles and equipment will lose the entitlement and will have to move over to white diesel.

Who isn’t affected?

• ​agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and fish farming
• ​rail transport
• fuel used for non-commercial purposes – electricity generation and heating 
• community sports clubs and golf courses
• sailing, boating and marine transport 
• travelling fairs and travelling circuses.

By the 1st April 2022, you must not have rebated fuel in your vehicles and machinery if they’re not allowed to use it. That’s why its important that you create a plan to run down this fuel to avoid have to sell or dispose of it, which might not be cost-effective for your business.​​
