How often should you service your car?

Car servicing is an important part of maintaining your vehicle. But how often should you get booked in?

There aren’t many better ways to keep your car running at its best than regular servicing, but how often should get it done? And what kind of service do you need?

Unlike MOTs, car servicing isn’t a legal requirement, but there are recommended intervals to keep it in tip-top condition – and maintain its resale value.

Here’s what you need to know.

Car servicing intervals

Modern cars will often tell you when they need servicing via the dashboard or information systems, but there’s a general rule of thumb to follow:

  • Interim service/oil and filter change: every six months or 5-7,000 miles
  • Full/standard service: every 10-12,000 miles, or 12 months
  • Major service: every 20-24,000 miles or 12 months

And you can get any of these services from your local Marshall store with cinchServicing.

What types of car services are there?

Exactly what’s included in each level of car service can differ depending on where you get them done. As a rule, here’s what you’ll get:

  • Interim service/oil and filter change

As the alternative name suggests, an interim service usually includes an engine oil and filter change. You’ll also get some health checks on the car.

  • Full/standard service

Includes an engine oil and oil filter change, coolant and screen wash top ups and health checks for your car.

  • Major service

Includes everything from a standard service, plus an air filter change and more in-depth health checks.

You might also get top-ups to additional fluids (e.g. brake fluid and power steering fluid) and a cabin air filter change.

Diesel, petrol, electric and hybrid cars typically follow the same service intervals. There are different elements of the car that will be inspected depending on the fuel type, but a trained technician will know what they’re looking for.

What types of electric car service are there?

Electric cars have fewer moving parts than their internal combustion counterparts, but they still need regular servicing.

You can get the following levels of electric car service at a Marshall store with cinchServicing:

  • Standard EV service

This often includes full diagnostics of your, any software updates it needs and an inspection of the high-voltage electronic components. Plus, there’s usually some standard health checks.

  • Major EV service

You’ll usually get everything from a standard EV service and a few extras, such as a cabin air filter change and more in-depth health checks.

How to know when your car needs a service

Knowing when your car needs a service is easy if you keep an eye on things.

Firstly, monitor the service intervals. So, if you tend to get a service every year (or 10-12,000 miles) with your MOT, it’s recommended that you get a major service every other year (or ever 24 months/20-24,000 miles). It’s that simple.

Modern cars typically have a service light – it usually looks like a little spanner – that shows when your next service is due.

Many drivers get their car serviced when it goes in for an MOT to save themselves an extra trip to the garage.

You might also want to take your car in for a service if it feels sluggish or fuel efficiency is going down. There might be an easy fix that a technician can spot during health checks.

Warning lights can also be a sign that it’s time to service, as well as strange noises or smells from the engine. A garage can help you with this and give advice.

How to get your car ready for a service

You don’t need to do much to prepare for your service, but there are a few things that can make it easier for your technician.

  • Put your locking wheel nut somewhere easy to find, like a cupholder (they’re usually kept in the glovebox or under the boot floor with the spare wheel)
  • Clean the inside and outside of the car to make it easy to inspect
  • Remove your personal items to prevent any accidental damage
  • Think of any issues you might want to mention – such as tyres that deflate quickly or any strange noises
