Commencing from the 23rd of October 2017 and the start of the bustling Autumn Half Term, London Mayor Sadiq Khan will introduce a pioneering “T-Charge”, with the aim of cleaning up the city’s air.
A shocking 9,000 London residents are said to die prematurely each year as a result of long-term exposure to air pollution, while 438 of the city’s schools are situated in areas which break legal levels of air quality; a harsh reminder of how disastrous air pollution is for those who dwell in the Capital. With hotspots such as Oxford Street routinely breaking World Health Organization and EU limits on pollution, it’s high time to hit the brakes on vehicle effluence.
Unparalleled by any other city in the world, the £10 Toxicity Charge will run alongside the existing Congestion Charge, which had its 14th anniversary this year; an emissions standard which will raise the bar to previously unseen levels, with the hope of setting a new benchmark for protecting the air we breathe. Enforced by numerous cameras equipped with licence plate recognition technology, this is a levy which can’t be given the slip.
Vehicles which do not meet Euro 4 emissions standards - generally those registered before 2006 - are the biggest targets for the Emissions Surcharge, with drivers able to check their car’s eligibility on TFL’s free online vehicle tracker (www.tfl.gov.uk/emissions-surcharge). For vehicles who are affected by both the new T-Charge and the existing Congestion Charge (Monday to Friday 7am – 6pm), a pre-Euro 4 vehicle will cost a hefty £21.50 per day to drive in the zone which covers most of central London; a massive incentive for drivers to ditch vehicles with poor fuel efficiency for a more frugal model, or simply stick to public transport.
The Mayor has also made a second pledge to keep London green; a commitment to only purchase hybrid or zero-emission double-decker buses from 2018, ensuring that even the city’s cleaner travel options are shrinking their carbon footprint. Environmental groups hope that this initiative will be a catalyst for a government-imposed Clean Air Act, aiming to reduce current damage and create a sustainable future for the health of Londoners and beyond.
