The order books are finally open for Volkswagen’s pioneering new flagship. So, what do we have to look forward to?
Sports car power and estate practicality are flawlessly juxtaposed in the new Arteon, boasting five doors and five seats in a head-turning gran Turismo package. A length of 4,862 mm, width of 1,871 mm and height of 1,450 mm offer a commanding presence on the road, before you even consider the fact that five adults can comfortably sit inside. Class-leading legroom of 1,016 mm is courtesy of the large 2,837 wheelbase, while ample luggage capacity of 563 litres can be shifted to an engulfing 1,557 litres when the rear seats are folded. Kitchen sink, anyone?
On its initial release in the UK, the new Arteon will boast three turbo charged direct injection engines, offering plenty of torque for when the seats and boot are full. A 280 PS 2.0 TSI petrol and two 2.0 TDI diesel engines start proceedings with a bang, producing athletic outputs of 240 PS and 150 PS. When behind the wheel of the petrol variant, you can expect to hit 62 mph in a spine-tingling 5.4 seconds; but don’t worry, efficiency shan’t be left in the layby. Should you opt for the 150 PS diesel, the new Arteon will furnish you with a respectable 62.8 mpg.
When it comes to technology, the new Arteon is keen to show off Volkswagen’s finest. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), City Emergency Braking, Front Assist, Speed Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Assist and a Driver Alert fatigue warning system will do its level best to keep you both safe and relaxed behind the wheel, while infotainment is put on a pedestal through the premium Discover Pro; all of your data is presented through a crystal clear 9.2-inch glass screen, with gesture control and a heads-up display ensuring that your eyes are always where they should be - firmly on the road ahead.
The new Volkswagen Arteon can be yours from £32,305 OTR.
