With de-icing being a dreaded chore for motorists each winter, Volkswagen have introduced an intelligent new climate windscreen to make life easier.
Traditional heated windscreens contain metal wires which can be a visibility hazard in some lighting conditions, hence why you tend to find them in your rear window, but not at the front. Volkswagen have tackled the issue by designing a thin electrically conductive layer of silver within the glass, providing heat by converting electric current of no more than 400 to 500 watts. Heating up without the use of any filament wires, the windscreen will gently melt away ice, without obscuring the driver’s view; not only that, be re-misting will also be kept at bay.
The new windscreen will also feature tiny filaments to heat the windscreen wipers, to prevent them becoming stuck in ice.
The climate windscreen isn’t just for winter, however. When the weather warms up, the silver layer will help to shield the vehicle from heat, keeping it up to 15 degrees cooler than tinted glass solutions; when a car is parked in the sun, the system will also work to reduce heat in the cabin as fast as possible, allowing the driver and passengers stay comfortable when they re-enter.
Available as an optional extra in the Golf, Golf Sportsvan, Tiguan, Sharan, Passat and Passat Variant, prices for the new climate windscreen start at €340.
